Norcross Email Extravaganza Vol. 384
A weekly email for the young & forever young in Historic Norcross
DID YOU KNOW...?
Monday, February 2 is Groundhog Day! The date falls halfway between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. The tradition of looking for signs at this time of year spans centuries! In parts of Europe, Christians believed a sunny Candlemas signaled 40 more days of cold and snow. Germans added their own twist, watching whether badgers or other small animals saw their shadows.
When German immigrants settled Pennsylvania in the 18th and 19th centuries, they chose the native groundhog as forecaster. The first official celebration took place in Punxsutawney in 1887, and thousands still gather and watch each year!

Love how this newsletter captures the whole community vibe in one place. The Groundhog Day history bit is pretty cool tbh, didn't realize it went back that far to European traditions. We had something similar back in my hometown where folks would watch for early birds instead of groundhogs lol. This kind of centralized local info is exactly what keeps neighborhoods tihgt knit.
