Norcross Email Extravaganza Vol. 358
A weekly email for the young & forever young in Historic Norcross
DID YOU KNOW...?
In early Norcross, fire was a constant threat. Most buildings were wooden, and no formal fire service existed. Major blazes shaped local history, including the 1879 fire that destroyed L.P. Murray’s grist mill and the 1904 fire that leveled three buildings where Savage Pizza and Zapata now stand. In 1908, the railroad depot burned along with over 300 bales of cotton and several freight cars. Residents used buckets and basic tools to fight the flames.
In 1919, the city council acquired a 60-gallon Ajax fire engine on trial, which used chemical tanks and a hose system. It proved effective and was purchased later that year. By 1920, Norcross built its first fire station behind Pickens’ store, marking the start of organized firefighting. Read Gene Ramsay’s full retelling here.
