Norcross Email Extravaganza Vol. 301
A weekly email for the young & forever young in Historic Norcross
DID YOU KNOW...?
The City of Norcross celebrates the Fourth of July on the third due to the influence of Johnson’s Store, an historic business established in 1885. In 1989, Carl Johnson and his wife Sherry revived the store to help rejuvenate downtown Norcross. Carl proposed celebrating Independence Day on July 3 to avoid competing with Lenox Square’s event on the fourth. Despite initial resistance from the city, the celebration became popular and was eventually adopted by the city with a larger budget.
*Carl also initiated the Passion Play to unite black and white communities after witnessing a KKK meeting in Thrasher Park. His efforts brought national attention to Norcross, including a campaign stop by President Bush at Johnson’s Store. The store, the oldest continually run business in Gwinnett County, left a lasting legacy in Norcross.

DOG OF THE WEEK
Looking for a friendly, happy dog to join your family? Meet Deniqua! She's a 2-year-old, medium-high energy girl who loves hugs, kisses, and playing with plushie toys and other dogs. Deniqua is kid-friendly, knows some commands, is a great car rider, and loves to cuddle. She has been waiting at the shelter for over 200 days for her forever home. Could that home be yours?
